QUICK START DOG CRATE | PUPPY CAGE TRAINING GUIDE

  1. Put the dog crate in an area where you and your puppy can spend time together - leave the dog crate door open.
  2. Any time your puppy shows any attention towards the dog crate (like sniffing it) praise hi or her and give them affection or a treat. Repeat this over and over. It can take a while but really helps your puppy to be aware of the crate as a good thing.
  3. This step asks more of your puppy. Reduce the treating or affection. Don't give affection or give a treat for only a glance at the dog crate now, wait until your pup walks over to the dog crate, then give enthusiastic praise or treat.
  4. Repeat Step 3 a lot of times and then reduce the affection or treats for the puppy. Hold off with your praise and treats until your puppy actually steps in the dog crate. Repeat and reinforce the desired behaviour. Now your pup should be popping in and out of the crate to in the hopes of affection and /or a treat. Wait until the puppy goes into the crate and stays until you offer the reward of affection or treat.
  5. The final step is to have your puppy step inside the crate, lie down and then you will close the crate door (only for a few moments to begin with) and feed some treats through the door and praise him or her.
Use a phrase signal to assist the process or understanding such as "dog crate" or "go crate". Say your signal phrase each time your dog steps inside the crate - he will soon associate the word with the act of getting in to the crate.
